Pharmaceutical Liver Therapy

Kinase Inhibitor to treat Hepatocellular Carcinoma

A new drug application for patients with liver cancer (unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma, or HCC) was approved by FDA for a kinase inhibator used for advanced new kidney cancer before. Liver cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, and the sixth most widespread cancer globally. 90% of the primary malignant liver tumors in adults can be accounted to Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC), the most common form of liver cancer. Each year 600,000 people worldwide are diagnosed with liver cancer, and its incidence is rising. Annualy 54,000 in Europe, 19,000 people in the USA, and 390,000 in China, Korea and Japan are diagnosed with liver cancer.

Cell-based Liver Therapy

Even if Cell-based liver therapy might not seem exactly right under "Pharmaceutical Liver Therapy", we regard it interesting enough to follow the development. The Belgium's Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) and the UCL-affiliated Cliniques Universitaires Saint Luc (St. Luc Hospital) are working on human liver engrafting cells (hLEC) as a potential cell-based liver therapy. Hope is to improve the treatment for children with liver-based metabolic disorders in the future.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Traditional Chinese Medicine, e.g. in the treatment of tumor's of the liver, is not generally accepted by the western medicine. However the combination of TCM and western medicine might have some advantages. A Korean study looking for effects of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) on alcohol-induced fatty liver in rats came to the conclusion that TCM treatment causes significant reduction in alcohol-induced lipid hepatic accumulation, reversing fatty liver and liver damage, and can be used as a remedy for alcoholic fatty liver.
